Auckland's historic St James theatre was damaged by fire last night for the second time in a decade.
Emergency services were called to the scene at 10pm. Fire was found in the basement of the Queen St theatre, which is a category one historic place.
The complex was closed after a fire in 2007 and had re-opened in May.
About 13 fire engines were at the scene, focusing on the back entrance to the theatre, on Lorne St.
Black smoke could be seen coming from the building and members of the public had gathered to watch.
Steve Bielby, principal trustee for the Auckland Notable Properties Trust - the building's developer - said he had been into the foyer of the theatre, and the damage did not look too bad.
